Bubbler @ Madison Public Libraries: A System-Wide Approach to Learning through Making

Thanks to an IMLS National Leadership Grant, Madison Public Library (Wis.) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison are engaged in a collaborative process seeking to understand and strengthen “Bubbler”: a maker-focused program for all-ages. In this participatory workshop, learn how Bubbler acts as a platform for artists to share their craft and inspire others, uses digital storytelling with court-involved teens at the Juvenile Detention Center and Shelter Home, and is developing a system-wide model unique in its community-based approach and methods to engage Madison’s underserved populations.
At the end of this session, participants will:
1: Re-envision how public libraries facilitate and evaluate learning
2: Reflect on how public libraries can provide innovative learning experiences to at-risk youth
3: Re-define how community creativity can re-shape public libraries

Trent Miller, Library Program Coordinator

Trent Miller is an artist, curator, and the Head Bubblerarian at Madison Public Library, where he is spearheading the library's maker-focused program called The Bubbler. He was recently recognized by Library Journal as a 2015 Mover & Shaker. Miller centers his energies on establishing the public library as a platform for creative and innovative art events, shows, and workshops with an emphasis on local creators.
Jesse Vieau, Teen Services Librarian
Madison Public Library, Madison, WI
Jesse Vieau is a Teen Services Librarian with Madison Public Library. He is the lead organizer for the library's Teen Bubbler programs, including the Making Justice program for court-involved teens. Vieau has extensive experience in coordinating community outreach programs as well as engaging teens in digital projects.

Alexandra Lakind is a doctoral student in Curriculum and Instruction and Environment and Resources at University of Wisconsin Madison. She is interested in how people learn through the arts and the design of programs that build community and encourage dialogue.
