Disasters Bring Out the Best in Us: Providing Community Support When it is Needed Most

Libraries can be valuable assets during disasters and public health emergencies when other facilities and services may be compromised or closed. In an interactive format, instructors will share how public librarians can become an integral part of the emergency preparedness and response efforts in the local community. They will also demonstrate an array of existing resources, tools, and programs that are available to support them in this role.
At the end of this session, participants will:
1: Identify professional roles for librarians during all stages of the disaster management cycle.
2: Understand the patterns of information use among the disaster and emergency workforce.
3: Know how to find and use disaster health information tools relevant to your community.

Dan Wilson is the Associate Director for Collections & Library Services at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Library.He is also the Coordinator for the National Network/Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) National Emergency Preparedness & Response plan.In this role, he oversees the development of the national plan, works with staff and state coordinators in the eight regions of the NN/LM on preparedness and response procedures, and provides training in service continuity planning for libraries.
Elizabeth Norton, Librarian

Elizabeth Norton is a librarian with the U.S. National Library of Medicine Disaster Information Management Research Center where she has been working to improve online access to disaster health information for the disaster medicine and public health workforce. She has presented on this topic at national and international association meetings and has provided training on disaster health information resources to first responders, educators, and librarians working with the disaster response and public health preparedness communities.
Siobhan Champ-Blackwell, Librarian
National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, MD
Siobhan Champ-Blackwell is a Medical Librarian, working at the National Library of Medicine Disaster Information Management Research Center. She selects content for "Disaster Lit: Resource Guide for Disaster Medicine and Public Health", a database of disaster medicine grey literature for first responders and receivers. Siobhan provides training and presentations on locating credible disaster health information in preparation for, response to, and recovery from a disaster.
