Dragons in the Library: Tabletop Gaming and the Public Library

Want to introduce role-playing or tabletop gaming at your library? The Fresno County (Calif.) Public Library developed the Bookwyrm Gaming Convention to do just that. They’ll discuss how to reach new library users including comic enthusiasts and tabletop gamers, as well as how to organize, advertise, and connect with local businesses to create a similarly successful event at your library.
At the end of this session, participants will:
1: Understand the importance of using alternative programs to draw new readers, especially from the 18-24 age group, to the library. 2: Understand how to organize a similar event at your library. 3: Understand the benefits of tabletop gaming events in public libraries.

I graduated from UC Santa Barbara in 2008 with a B.A. in History. In 2010, I earned my M.A. in history from California State University, Fresno. During my years at CSU Fresno, I worked in the University Archives and Special Collections. I graduated from San Jose State University in May 2014/ Currently, I oversee all youth (children's and teen) services for three libraries in the Fresno County Public Library system.
James Tyner, Senior Library Assistant / Poet Laureate
Fresno County Public Library - Gillis Branch, Fresno, CA
James Tyner has worked for the Fresno County Public Library System for over 15 years. He has developed several types of gaming programs, including a gaming convention. Tyner is also a published poet with work appearing in many anthologies and journals. He has won many awards including the Ernesto Trejo award, the Larry Levis poetry prize, the Andres Montoya poetry prize, and may more. He is the first poet laureate of Fresno, California.
