This program will deal with Board wars and power plays among the trustees, the Board, and the director. Role playing will be an essential part of the program. How can the director manage the Board in a positive way ensuring successful outcomes? How can Board wars be avoided and how can it be done right?
At the end of this session, participants will:
1: Learn new techniques for taming troublesome trustees.
2: Understand how important good working Boards are for the library.
3: Learn how to create and maintain high functioning boards.

Paul Mills serves as the Executive Director of the Fountaindale Public Library District in Bolingbrook, Illinois, a position he has held since 2011. Paul has also served as a trustee for the Shorewood-Troy Public Library District, as a consultant for several regional library systems, and as co-chair of the Illinois Library Association Awards Committee.
Peggy Danhof, Board President

Peggy Danhof has been a Trustee for the Fountaindale Public Library District in Bolingbrook, Illinois for nineteen years, the past twelve years serving as President of the Board. Peggy served as Charter President of ALA/United for Libraries and also served on the ALA/APA LSSC-CRC for three years as well as the ALA Advocacy Committee.
Dierdre Brennan, Executive Director

Deirdre (Dee) Brennan has been the Executive Director of the Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS) since January 2013. Previously, she was Executive Director of the Oak Park Public Library and served as Chief of Public Services at the Boston Public Library where she managed regional and statewide services for 103 libraries of different types.

Sally Gardner Reed is the executive director of United for Libraries and is the staff liaison for its PLA Program Planning Committee.

Nancy Bolt was State Librarian in Colorado for 18 years, leaving in 2005 torestart her library consulting company, Nancy Bolt and Associates. Bothduring her time as State Librarian and since, Nancy has worked with publiclibrary trustees on their proper role as leaders, decision-makers, andadvisors on public library boards.
Kathy Spindel, Trustee

Kathy has been a Trustee at the Foutaindale Public Library since 2007. She is currently treasurer and serves as a liaison to the finance committee. As a member of United for Libraries she serves on the PLA Program committee, Leadership Orientation Committee, and United's Advocacy, Legislation, and Intellectual Freedom Committee.
