Read & Reach: Promoting Physical Activity in Storytime Programs

Join us for this lively, engaging session which will introduce Read & Reach, a comprehensive resource of children’s books that encourage physical activity. Read & Reach provides detailed information to assist librarians in developing storytime programs that encourage health promotion. Background information on reasons and rationale for integrating physical activity into library programs will be discussed. Popular youth services librarian and immediate past-president of ALSC, Starr LaTronica, will lead an active storytime session.
At the end of this session, participants will:
1: Learn how to lead a children's storytime session that emphasizes and integrates physical activity as a component of the program. 2: Identify print resources available for promoting physical activity in storytime programs. 3: Identify key reasons and rationale for integrating physical activity into library programs aimed at youth.

Mary Grace Flaherty, Asst. Professor

Mary Grace Flaherty is an assistant professor at the School of Information & Library Science at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She has a PhD from Syracuse University, an MLS from the University of Maryland and MS from Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Flaherty has over 25 years' experience working in a variety of library settings and is a member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals.
Faith Burns, Librarian
Durham County Library, TBA, NC
Faith Burns is the teen librarian of the Main Branch of the Durham County Library, in Durham, NC. She is also a recent graduate of the University of North Carolina. As the teen librarian at the Main Library she is active in leading STEM and MakerSpace programming for young people in the community. She loves working with her great group of teens!
Starr LaTronica, Youth Services/Outreach Manager
Four County Library System, Vestal, NY
Starr LaTronica is the immediate Past-President of ALSC and Youth Services/Outreach Manager for the Four County Library System (NY). She has served as: chair of the Newbery Award committee, judge for the NYT Best Illustrated Books for Children, and panelist for the National Book Award (Young People's Literature). Starr is an adjunct at Binghamton University. She received her MLS from UC-Berkeley and is the namesake for Pinkwater's librarian character Starr Lakawanna in Looking for Bobowitz.
