Library Leadership for Family Engagement

Children exhibit healthy development and academic success when families are engaged: when families foster nurturing parent-child relationships, take responsibility for children’s learning, and encourage children to focus on effort and learn from failure. Family engagement must be supported where learning occurs – which includes the public library! PLA and the Harvard Family Research Project are collaborating to identify and promote easy, flexible ideas for libraries to strengthen family engagement work. Learn how library leadership can drive change and innovation to make family engagement work.
At the end of this session, participants will:
1: Understand the importance of family engagement to children's academic success and social development
2: Recognize the important role public libraries play in family engagement
3: Gain ideas leaders can use to improve family engagement at their library

Margaret Caspe, Senior Research Analyst
Harvard Family Research Project, Cambridge, MA
Margaret Caspe, PhD, is a Senior Research Analyst at Harvard Family Research Project. Her research focuses on how families, early childhood programs, schools, and community spaces support children's learning. Dr. Caspe develops resources for the Libraries For the 21st Century: It's a Family Thing project of which the Public Library Association is a partner. She also designs material to prepare educators for family engagement and assists in efforts to evaluate family engagement initiatives.
Lorette McWilliams, Research Analyst
Harvard Family Research Project, Cambridge, MA
Lorette McWilliams is a Research Analyst at Harvard Family Research Project. She is a certified School Psychologist, with experience in private and public schools as a psychologist, special education chairperson, and consultant. Lorette is a PhD candidate at Lesley University.
