Understanding Microaggressions: A Catalyst for Climate Change in the Workplace

The goal of this session is to understand the physical, psychological, and environmental effects of microaggressions in the workplace. This interactive session defines organizational climate and shares research that uncovers microaggressions (including role, hierarchy, gender, and race) and their affect in the workplace. In addition, this session will engage participants to identifying microaggressions, then work collaboratively to develop strategies to address and remove them from the workplace.
At the end of this session, participants will:

Myron Anderson, Associate to the President for Diversity and Associate Professor
Metropolitan State University of Denver, Denver, CO
Dr. Anderson serves MSU Denver as the Chief Diversity Officer. A member of the president's cabinet, Anderson is responsible for resolving current and future issues related to diversity. Anderson identifies campus climate trends and assists in developing strategies to promote "inclusive excellence". Anderson performs research in the areas of distance education, campus climate, and microaggressions in higher education. He has recently co-published an article entitled "Hierarchical Microaggressions" in the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education.
Kathryn Young, Assistant Professor of Secondary Education, School of Education
Metropolitan State University of Denver, Denver, CO
Dr. Young is an Assistant Professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver and serves as a Faculty Fellow with the Office of Institutional Diversity. Dr. Young earned a Ph.D. in Educational Policy from University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Young has worked as an educator for 18 years. She researches Disability Studies, Inclusive Education, Diversity and (Hierarchical) Microaggressions and in the Workplace. Dr. Young has 15 published papers and numerous presentations.
