Get Outside the Lines: Reintroducing Your Library to the Community

Outside the Lines provides a framework for libraries of all types and sizes to reintroduce themselves to their communities. Learn how this international grassroots initiative helps get people thinking – and talking – about libraries in a whole new way. In this interactive session, we’ll discuss some of the innovative ways libraries have connected with their communities, the importance of reshaping our library stories, and together brainstorm some fun, creative engagement strategies.

This highly interactive concurrent program session was also offered on Friday, April 8, 2016, at 2:00–3:00 PM.

At the end of this session, participants will:

1: Learn how to engage your community in new, creative ways.
2: Explore the power of libraries working together to demonstrate the creativity and innovation happening in our industry.

Stacie Ledden is the Director of Innovations and Brand Strategy at Anythink Libraries. After joining the district in 2008, Stacie assisted in launching the Anythink brand that garnered the 2011 John Cotton Dana Award for Outstanding Public Relations in Libraries. In 2012, she helped launch R-Squared - The Risk & Reward Conference, which focused on creativity and taking smart risks to move libraries forward. Stacie was named one of Library Journal's Movers and Shakers for 2013.

Dolly Goyal is a California 2012 Eureka! Leadership Institute graduate and a 2014 ALA Emerging Leader. Dolly was also part of the 2015 YALSA Michael L. Printz Award committee. She started her career in libraries as a Teen Services Librarian for Santa Clara Library and San Mateo County Library before becoming a Branch Manager in 2013.

My experience as a local government and library attorney informs my State Library board training and policy development work. In promoting Colorado libraries to non-library people, I attend meetings of civic and business leaders, and provide meeting facilitation and strategic planning services. I foster sustainable funding for libraries through formation of library districts and can help guide governments and grassroots groups through the formation and election processes.

Cancellation Policy

Written cancellations, requests for refunds, and/or changes will be accepted until February 26, 2016, and are subject to a $30 handling fee. Refunds will be processed after April 25, 2016. According to PLA policy, all meal events require preregistration. The above cancellation/change information also applies to all preconferences, meal events, and tours.

The PLA 2016 Conference is offered on a cost-recovery basis. PLA reserves the right to cancel all or any part of this event if there is insufficient registration or for other reasons. Neither ALA nor PLA is responsible for cancellation charges assessed by the airlines or travel agencies, or other losses incurred due to the cancellation of the workshops. Attire

There is no formal dress code at the PLA Conference. What’s most important is to dress for comfort.

Conference Logo

The custom logos of the PLA 2016 Conference are the property of PLA. Anyone wishing to use the logos in their communications and promotional materials must: 1) Seek permission from PLA; and 2) Submit communication/artwork incorporating the logo to PLA for final approval. The logo may not be modified and must be reproduced in its entirety (i.e., no outlines, cropping). No carrying of firearms allowed in the Colorado Convention Center unless you’re on-duty law enforcement or off-duty and on payroll of the show or SMG (convention center management).
